Manila’s Walled City

 


Intramuros was Manila from the time it was founded in 1571 to the end of Spanish sovereignty in 1898. Intramuros, which means "within the wall," served as the headquarters of the Spanish occupation for 400 years, having been established to house Spanish government officials and their families.



The historic 'Walled City' of Intramuros in Manila dates from a previous age, yet its historical value assures that it remains important throughout time. It has survived several tragedies, including from wars to natural disasters, and has adapted to colonizers and invaders. Intramuros is considered by many to be the history of the Philippines.

It is now a famous place for historical walking tours and cultural events, allowing tourists to learn about the country's unique history.
